Primary Health Care
The Primary Health Care Programme uses student volunteers from the Faculty of Health Sciences to assist patients in rural or other deserving areas through evening clinics, day clinics, weekend or holiday clinics. During 2008 2 099 patients received assistance from 77 student volunteers working a total of 1 858 student hours.
MGD clinics have a dual purpose. It provides an opportunity for students to acquire practical experience in a social setting amongst their fellow students, while at the same time rendering an essential health service in developing communities. It also creates a social awareness and responsibility among the students.
The students work under supervision of an experienced medical doctor and a pharmacist supervises the pharmaceutical services.
During 2008 the following service were rendered:
- Evening Clinics - 6 clinics were held in Kalkfontein, Kuils River, rendering service to 307 patients
- Day Clinics - the 5 clinics held in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch were attended by 540 patients
- Weekend and Holiday Clinics - The West Coast, Grabouw and Ceres were visited over weekends and/or during the July holidays. 1252 patients attended these clinics.
The MGD Primary Health Care programme offers a “win-win” opportunity to all parties. The patients receive valuable and free health services and the students improve their clinical and health care skills.
