CONSTITUTION OF THE ENGLISH SOCIETY





1. MISSION STATEMENT.




















The English Society is a departmental society affiliated to the English Department of the Lettere and Wysbegeerte Faculty of the University of Stellenbosch.
The Society caters for all students with an interest in English literature and related cultured events, also promoting these interests and augmenting the official curriculum of the English Department.
The society seeks to facilitate increased exposure to such literary and cultural pursuits through the organisation of various excursions and functions around relevant and related themes.


2. MEMBERSHIP

(a)

All registered students of English automatically have membership of the Society, and therefore have membership fees deducted from their student accounts.

(b)

Any other interested students may join the Society against deduction of the same amount in membership fees from their student accounts.

(c)

The Committee may suspend membership of a member of the society for a specified period if in the judgment of the committee such member is guilty of serious misconduct towards the society.

(d)

Members are entitled to:
(i)  Discounts on transport and on access to functions.
(ii)  Inclusion on the English Society mailing-list.



3. COMMITTEE

(a)

The committee consists of at least seven, but no more than fifteen members of the English Society.

(b)

The class representatives of each year group are ex officio members of the committee.

(c)

A Chairperson, a Treasurer and a Secretary must be appointed from within and by the committee.

(d)

The committee must call an Annual General Meeting in the third quarter, at which:
(i)  The Chair must present an annual report.
(ii)  The Treasurer must present a financial report.
(iii) A committee for the next year is elected, with the power and the obligation to appointup to half again their number from new members in the following year, if necessary.

(e)

No set quorum is required for the Annual General Meeting. However, the committee must do everything that is reasonably possible to ensure that the AGM is well attended.

(f)

A committee member may be expelled from the committee, through a process unanimously agreed upon by the committee, if all other attempts at resolving conflict have failed.


THE CONSTITUTION

(a) This constitution must be:

(i) Introduced to the members of the society during the third term
(ii) Ratified by the majority of members present at the Annual General Meeting

(b)

Amendments to this constitution may be affected by a two thirds majority of the committee, but must be ratified by the majority of members present at the Annual General Meeting.
