NEW SA JUNIOR RECORD AT WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Johannesburg, Monday, 14 July 2008 – Athletics South Africa (ASA) today announced that South Africa’s 4x100m relay team set a new South African junior record of 39,70 secs on Saturday at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland to take the bronze medal in the event.
The foursome of Johannes Mosala, Roscoe Engel, Patrick Vosloo and Wilhelm van der Vyver finished behind the United States (38,96 secs) and Jamaica (39,25 secs).

Andre Olivier also won a bronze medal in the 800m with a time of 1:47,57. The event was won by Sudan’s Abubaker Kaki in 1:45,60.

Cornel Fredericks and PC Beneke recorded their personal best times in the final of the 400m hurdles. Fredericks finished fourth in 50,39 secs and Beneke fifth in 50,78 secs and confirmed that they can continue South Africa’s top performances in this event in the future.

Cheyne Rahme finished 11th in the pole vault final with a height of 5,00m.

In other events Claudia Viljoen recorded a time of 14,08 secs in the semifinal of the 100m hurdles to finish 8th while Christy Coetzee was 23rd in the qualifying rounds of the long jump for women with a distance of 5,56m. Both were eliminated.

The women’s 4x100m relay team was 7th in their semifinal heat and did not qualify for the final.

Willem Voigt also did not qualify for the final of the high jump when he finished 15th in the qualification round.
